Ten Top Tips To Help Your Baby Stop Crying

by Guest Bloggers The Gentle Touch.

Having a baby who cries a lot can take its toll on everyone in the family, and finding out the reason for their crying and how to help relieve them can be tricky and stressful. We have compiled a list of things you can try.

It is important to remember that all babies are different and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another but these ideas seem to help many of our clients.

1. Massage
Massaging your baby’s tummy has been well documented to help with their wind/constipation and general digestive discomforts. It is best not to massage during an episode of crying but we suggest massaging your baby’s tummy 3 times during the day to help prevent the build-up of gas which can lead to a bloated/hard and uncomfortable tummy by late afternoon and early evening. If you would like to learn more click to read Massage to help Colic.

2. Breathe
Babies will tune into your emotions, so by learning techniques to reduce your own stress levels you’re building your resilience to difficult situations. This simple breathing technique below can be helpful if your baby is in the middle of a screaming episode and you’re trying to remain calm. Deep breathing not only helps to cure anxiety and stress, it also enables relaxation.

You could practice during the quiet moments of your day as well, the more you practice the quicker it will take you to that quiet place in your mind.

Equal breath:

Close your eyes and begin to notice your natural breath, not changing anything at first. Begin a slow count to four as you inhale. Then also count to four as you exhale. Try to match the length of your inhale with the exhale, as you breathe through your nose. You can change the numbers but always keep them equal. This exercise is really useful for calming and focussing the mind and also for getting yourself to sleep (baby permitting) it’s like counting sheep.

If this technique helped you then read our blog Breathing for Parents.

3. Noise
It is not surprising that babies like noise, they have just spent 9 months in the womb listening to your heartbeat, circulating blood and digestion! It might be comforting for your baby to hear similar noises whilst they are transitioning to the world on the outside. You can buy white noise cds/ download apps, some parents notice that even washing machine noise or vacuum cleaner can help settle their fussing baby.

You could also simply make a ‘shuuushing’ noise close to your baby whilst holding them in your arms, this noise is said to be similar to the blood flowing through arteries near the womb, a very familiar and comforting noise to a newborn.

4. Suckle
Babies are born with a very strong, natural urge to suck, some babies are born with a greater need to suck than others. It is common and natural for them to fall asleep on the breast or bottle. If your baby is particularly upset you could try a dummy or a clean finger.

5. Movement
Babies weren’t still whilst in the womb, imagine, they were surrounded by amniotic fluid, constantly being gently rocked. Many babies find this movement comforting after birth; they will love to be close to you and hearing your heartbeat and smelling your familiar scent. The stillness of lying in a moses basket can be scary and unsettling for them. There are some fabulous Slings and Carriers available on the market, and often local sling libraries to try before you buy.

There are also some great holds you can do in arms. Tiger in a tree is a very good one for settling babies. Hold your baby with his back to you, nestle his head in the crook of your elbow, bringing your arm across his chest.

You can also try some simple rhythmic movements, rocking backwards and forwards. Try and be mindful of your own posture whilst doing this, take it in shifts if you have someone to do this with.

Alternatively you can pop them in a bouncy chair which might be enough to soothe them to a calmer state.

6. Physical Check
Birth can be a big deal for babies too. When some babies are born they can be in some discomfort, perhaps from a slow/fast birth or forcep delivery. Some have misshaped heads and other conditions which may be causing them pain. Osteopaths have a fantastic reputation for helping newborn babies following birth discomforts, well worth having a chat and seeing if they can help.

Some babies can also be suffering from reflux, silent reflux and other medical conditions which can cause them to cry and be in pain, please see your doctor or a pharmacist who may be able to help you with some over the counter medications if necessary.

7. Diet
If you are breastfeeding your baby it may be worth looking at your diet. Dairy is known as a common allergen, and can be passed via your milk, causing discomfort to your baby if they have an intolerance. If you’re worried about lack of calcium see here for more details on calcium and breastfeeding.

If you are formula feeding you could look at dairy free alternatives, but always speak to your doctor first before doing this.

To support your body during this time, when you’re under stress, eat as many vegetables and fruit as you can. Eating fatty foods, or too much refined or processed products can contribute to a low mood, so boost your diet with the following:
  • Omega 3 supports the body and brain, eat oily fish three times a week (e.g. Salmon, mackerel, sardines). Also flax seeds, hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds
  • B vitamins help reduce stress and support the body’s energy production – Brown rice, broccoli, pulses (lentils, beans), mushrooms
  • Protein rich foods to support your energy levels – turkey, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds as these help balance your hormones and will give you energy.
Contact a Breastfeeding Councillor, they are highly trained and will help you with your latch and position of feeding, these things can make a huge difference to the comfort of your baby. Similarly if you are bottle feeding, perhaps try a different bottle and teat, there are ones on the market said to help reduce air intake.

8. Bath
Give your baby a bath. Keep the bathroom environment calm and quiet, using dimmed lights and keep it relaxed. Some babies find the warmth and comfort of being in the water a relaxing sensation.

9. Say Yes to Help
You are doing an amazing job and dealing with such a difficult situation, all on little or no sleep. It's not your fault, and it's an incredibly hard start to being a parent. Say YES to a trusted friend, family member or neighbour who offers to help cook, clean or hold your baby. You deserve and need a break. Perhaps book a mobile therapist to come and give you an holistic massage in your own home, it’s important you take time to look after yourself so you can best look after your baby.

There is also support available from Cry-sis (www.cry-sis.org.uk) a charity set up to help parents dealing with a baby with excessive crying. They provide advice and support from parents who have been through the same thing.

10. Talk about it
It can be a lonely time and feel like a lifetime when you have a baby that cries a lot. It’s never easy asking for help but it’s important you do if you feel you are struggling to cope. Even our closest loved ones won’t know how we are feeling if we don’t tell them. Otherwise call your doctor, health visitor, midwife or other health professional and tell them what you are going through.

How Born Supports Families on their Feeding Journey

At Born, we follow NHS guidelines in supporting parents to achieve exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of their babies’ lives. We recognise that not all families can reach this goal, for a variety of reasons, and we try to help overcome any obstacles along the way in a non-judgemental and supportive manner. We work very closely with local Lactation Consultants, Midwives, and Doulas to complement the invaluable service they provide to mothers and babies.

Did you know?

  • We hire out breast-pumps, which are suitable for exclusive pumping.  This can help you get through the early days if there is an issue with latch or supply. If your baby is in NICU or SCBU, you can hire one of our pumps for use at home, at a reduced price. Pumps can be hired as single or double, and we also sell not just the pumps but a full range of accessories and spare parts. We currently work with Ardo to supply this service. Pumps can be collected from our store in Bristol, or dispatched via Special Delivery nationwide. Visit our Breast Pump Hire...

  • We also sell a range of expressing accessories,  such as freezer bags, glass storage bottles, feeding bottles and cups etc. Visit our Breastfeeding Accessories...

  • We provide a fitting service in our store for nursing bras, which can also be purchased online. After lots of research and testing, we continue to believe that Bravado offers the best and most comfortable bras on the market. They have recently streamlined their range to offer four different styles, all of high quality and suitable for use during pregnancy and once feeding has finished.

  • We stock a range of disposable nursing pads, as well as washable ones.  For minor discomfort in the early days we offer lanolin creams and warm/cold packs. We also work with local Herbalist Amanda Rayment who has created a beautiful Nursing Support Tea, to help increase milk supply.

  • Lovely extras for you are also available – nursing necklaces and pendants, comfortable pillows, and nursing covers. Visit our Feeding Accessories...

  • You are welcome to breastfeed or bottle feed in our store - In our Bristol store, we have probably the most comfortable Olli ella nursing chair in existence, all set up for you to feed your baby in case he or she gets hungry when you are out and about. On hand are nursing cushions, filtered water for you to drink, all you ensure you have a nice comfortable feed.

  • We also keep details of local practitioners who work with breastfeeding mothers in our store, or you can call customer services for more information as well. These are all people we have personal experience of working with, and come thoroughly vetted and recommended.

Can I Breastfeed my Baby in a Sling?

Do you struggle to breastfeed your baby in a sling or carrier? Or perhaps you are thinking of buying a sling and want to make sure it can enable breastfeeding? In preparation for National Breastfeeding Celebration Week (20th to 27th June), we asked our trained babywearing consultant Katie Richards to offer some expert advice...

Whenever we are asked in the sling library about breastfeeding in a sling, I always explain that breastfeeding in itself is a skill and that it is advisable to master a good feeding relationship before moving on to feeding in a sling.  It is also important to learn how to use your sling first too. Once both are master then you can move on to doing them both together. Once mastered, breastfeeding in a sling can prove very helpful, convenient and enjoyable.

Which is the best sling to use?

Some of the top slings to use if you are considering breastfeeding in a sling are:
These are tried and tested by parents who use the Born Sling Library. What all these slings have in common is the ease of use to get your baby into a comfortable feeding position. However there are many other slings you can try including pouches and mei tais.

Which position should I use?

Sling use and breastfeeding is a very personal experience and many mums I have worked with have given feedback that breastfeeding in a sling gives them more support so that not all the weight goes through their arms but they are still using their arms and hands to connect and hold their baby.

Positioning is important as you need to make sure that your baby is well supported. The two common feeding positions are Cradle and Upright.

Your breast size and shape will depend on whether you need to take the baby to your nipple or whether you can take your nipple to the baby - it is not easier or harder if you have bigger or smaller breasts, it will just adjust what techniques you use. You may find that you need to support the breast -  if so, you can use your hand, clothing (including nursing bras) or even roll up a muslin and tuck it in where you need the support.

Once your baby has latched on, be sure to retightened any parts of the sling that may have slipped, so that you are both supported.

Make sure that you can see your baby at all times. Sometimes babies do not like to have their heads pinned while they are feeding and so allow for adequate support for their neck (whether that be a part of the sling or you) and then space for the natural bobbing and movement that occurs for your baby during feeding.

Make sure you have suitable breastfeeding clothes and bras on. For example the Bravado nursing bras are wonderful for being able to release the clothing easily and quickly so that you can latch your baby on. Think scoop necks, baggy tshirts etc - less is more!

Nursing in a Ring Sling

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits of breastfeeding in a sling, including comfort, security and support. If you are holding your baby close to you on a regular basis, for 3 hours or more a day, then this skin to skin (kangaroo care) will help with a range of things such as:
  • Attachment/bonding
  • Hormonal increases, prolactin (milk supply – increase) oxytocin (feel good hormones) this can help to ward of post-natal depression
  • Help to support breastfeeding relationship
  • Newborn physiological regulations such as temperature

Top Tips to Prepare for Breastfeeding

Welcome to Born's Throwback Thursday, where we select a favourite or useful article from the Born blog archives and re-share! First published in 2013, this post with top tips for preparing to breastfeed generated a lot of feedback and proved extremely helpful for many families...

Just as you would prepare for birth, there are things that you can do to prepare for a smooth breastfeeding journey.

Relax
Listen to some relaxation recordings before the birth; this will also help with labour, and will help you when you are feeding your baby too. On our website, we host some Hypnosis for Childbirth recordings by Tracy Holloway that you can listen to for free.

Relaxed Birth and Parenting also have a lovely CD, Arrival, to help you relax and connect with your baby.

Consider a relaxing massage or Shiatsu (Acupressure) from a practitioner specially trained to work with pregnancy and post-natally.  Most practitioners on the Well Mother Register offer home visits for the first month. They can also teach self massage of the breast, which is extremely useful in helping to prevent blocked milk ducts.

Trust
Trust your body, trust your baby - when the two are put together frequently, comfortably and effectively, breastfeeding can become easier. Any form of bodywork, like yoga, Shiatsu, massage, meditation will support you to trust in your body and give you the mental space to just 'Be' with your baby.

Learn
Attend a class with a Lactation consultant or breastfeeding counsellor before your baby arrives. Breastfeeding is a new skill to learn, and because we don't see it in our culture every day, it is worth investing in a training session with your partner too. Supported mum = happy baby. Relaxed Birth and Parenting offer wonderful weekly mother-to-be classes and couples workshops to help you prepare for your baby's arrival.

Read about breastfeeding! There are plenty of informative books, including 'The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding',  'Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding' or 'The Food of Love'

Understand
Your breasts will change when your baby is born; if you know what to expect, you won't be caught off-guard. See the PDF and videos on our Bravado Designs page.

Nurture yourself
Buy a comfortable nursing bra. We've yet to find a range that beats Bravado. Get measured around the 36th week of pregnancy.

Drink pregnancy well-being tea and have a packet of Mama's Nursing Support Tea in your cupboard. It's not just that these teas contains fantastic vitamins and minerals, the very act of making loose leaf tea will help you to relax, and drinking it will calm you. Think of it as your 'calm down for feeding' ritual, where nothing else matters but giving your body and your baby some TLC. Amanda, the Herbalist from Welcome World who makes these teas, also makes a tincture that may help to boost milk production.

Find Breastfeeding Buddies
Speak to other mums who have breastfed. Find out if there is a breastfeeding support group close to you that you can go to before your baby comes so you can meet other breastfeeding mums. These groups LOVE having pregnant mums visit.

Attend a Baby Calm or Relaxed Birth and Parenting ante-natal class where you can meet other mums to be to share your journey

Make it comfortable
Try a good nursing support pillow,  for those first few weeks it may be your best friend and it will end up having lots of other support uses too! In the first few days of breastfeeding, getting the positioning correct is important to prevent your baby latching incorrectly. Sitting upright and with your feet and back supported makes this easier.

Buy a tube of Gold Cream, to protect and care for the nipples and breast during breastfeeding.

Keep help at hand
Know where to get help if things don't feel right, or if you need help. There is a lot of support out there. Better to ask a silly question than suffer in silence. Visit Lactation Specialists of Great Britain for skilled local help and keep your local contacts handy so if you need to contact them you can do that straight away. Pain and/or slow weight gain is an indicator that attachment needs experienced and speedy attention.

Set yourself up for success and enjoy this precious time!
Have you considered having a 'Baby Moon'? Think about the needs of you, your baby and your immediate family during this special bonding time.

Your baby will need to feed at night, and it's recommend by Unicef/Baby Friendly that baby is in your room for at least the first 6 months. This can be in your bed (follow the guidelines for safe bed-sharing or co-sleeping) or in a crib, cradle. cot or Moses basket next to your bed.

Find an Osteopath or Chiropractor you can take your baby to after birth for a check over. Regardless of what kind of birth you have, it's a good idea to do this to make sure there are no issues that could impede good attachment or can cause discomfort to baby or you. Visit Born Together for contact details of some trusted practitioners.

Read positive articles about breastfeeding, read websites that support breastfeeding mums such as www.normalfed.com.

Print these Positive affirmations for breastfeeding and read them every day in the last month of pregnancy, and after your baby arrives:

Top Tips for Cutting the Costs of Raising a New Baby

Welcome to Born's Throwback Thursday, where we select a favourite or useful article from the Born blog archives and re-share!

First published back in 2012, we've updated the figures for this article using the most recent 2014 report but our money-saving tips are still as current as ever...

When LV published their annual report (read small sample survey!) on the costs of raising a baby – it probably frightened the life out of expectant parents!

The 2014 report revealed the cost of raising a child from birth to their 21st birthday now totals a record £227,266. This equates to £10,822 a year, £901 a month or £30 a day.  Really, £30 a day! It seems an awful lot, but don't be too panicked - a closer read reveals that there are a fair few extras hidden within the figures...
The report shows childcare and education to be the greatest expenses. However, the cost of education includes school uniforms, after-school clubs, and university tuition fees!  Why not include the cost of buying them their first car or home as well – just to whack on a few 000’s!

If you’re wondering how that effects parents of babies or toddlers, LV put the cost for year one at a touch over £11,000 – but remember that includes childcare.  From one to five, the cumulative amount is £59,957.

Changing times

With times for everyone proving a little tight the report interestingly says that four in ten of those cutting back are buying items from second-hand shops and more than half (52%) used vouchers and discount codes when shopping.

So how can you enjoy this wonderful time but not incur massive debts along the way?  Now we can’t help with childcare or university fees but here are our top ideas!

Our top baby budget busting ideas

Carry don’t push!

Slings and carriers not only promote great bonding between parent and child but they also make fantastic economic sense.  A quality, good fitting sling may mean you can go without a lightweight buggy for a few years.  But make sure you choose a carrier that you feel comfortable in and on that is built to last – something like an Ergobaby or Je Porte Mon Bebe may be a few pounds more but they'll last and you’ll enjoy the experience a whole lot more!

One fantastic buggy is better than two not so great buggies!

Before choosing a pram, pushchair or buggy think about what you’re really going to need. So many people buy huge 3 in 1 travel systems that in principle are great but in reality can be unsuitable for day to day activities – a bit like buying a Rolls Royce when really what you need is a small Polo!  So think about something that really fit your lifestyle - that’s why many of our customers love The Bugaboo Bee3 - it works from birth to walking and it's nifty enough for the bus or tube!

Non- Disposable nappies = disposable cash

You’re probably aware of the eco-benefits of reusable nappies but did you know that washable cloth nappies will save you money as well! (Especially if you save them for future babies).  So even if creating a greener planet isn’t high on your priorities then saving £600 can prove very motivating.  For a breakdown of costs check out Money Saving Expert.

You’ll see that the savings you can enjoy with washable nappies will depend upon the type you choose – but our top tip is to balance the savings with choosing the nappies that are right for your lifestyle.

For more information why not read our Reusable Nappy guide or download the Real Nappy Guide

Swap & reuse

Parents have always borrowed or received handed down clothes from friends and family with older children and now more and more websites are springing up offering baby clothes to swap. It’s worth seeing if your local NCT or baby group run a swapping service.

Rent

In the US it’s increasingly common to find parents choosing to rent baby products, including clothing rather than buying outright.  This is especially true for items you may only need for a small period of time.

Our Bristol store hires out hospital grade breast pumps, great for if you only need one for a short time or to make sure you will get on with it before buying one.  Contact our Customer Service Team for details.
We also host a sling library on a Monday morning, where you can hire a sling, try before you buy and chat to the expert consultants about which carrier is right for your family.

Choose things that grow with your child

The Stokke and Leander range of furniture are great examples of how choosing well can also save you money.  The Stokke Tripp Trapp has been in our stores since we first opened over 15 years ago – not only is it a wonderful bit of furniture for the home and a design classic but it also makes fantastic economic sense because it can be altered to fit your child’s age from new born to old age.

Equally, the Leander Cot Bed transforms from cot to cot bed to junior bed.  Five different steps allow your child to gradually transition at their own pace from the comfort and safety of the cot through to the independence of their own bed.

Do you have any tips on how to save money when you have a young baby or toddler? Share them with us and we can help spread the word!

DIY Doll Cloth Nappy (with fabric poo!)

We found this on the brilliant Made by Joel blog and had to share it! Many toddlers love role playing and caring for their dolls or soft toys and we think this cloth nappy with detachable poo is genius! Add an additional cloth wipe or two and you've got the complete eco-friendly nappy kit!

The nappy and poo are easy to make with very minimal sewing. You can use fleece or felt as they keep their shape well, but any thick fabric would work.

How to make the Cloth Nappy:

1. Draw out a shape similar to the template below to fit your doll or animal, and cut out the pattern.  Then place the pattern over a piece of fleece (or felt) fabric and cut out the nappy shape.

2. Sew on the pieces of velcro for fastening the nappy and also the poo.

How to make the poo and wipes:

1. Find some brown fabric scrap, and cut into an oval shape, about 4.5×3.5 inches. Then sew a piece of velcro onto one side.  Make sure the velcro is opposite that on the nappy, so the velcro attaches.

2. Fold the oval in half length-wise so that the velcro is inside and sew down the edge, leaving an opening at the end, then turn right-side out, so that the velcro is on the outside. Sew the end closed.

3. Cut out a few squares of fabric as baby wipes and you're all set!

Thanks to Made by Joel for this great idea. Visit his blog for more craft ideas for you and your children.

Would your little one love to carry their "babies" in a carrier like yours? Check out our Boba Mini Toy Carriers, Beco Mini Toy Carriers, and Ergobaby Doll Carriers on the Born website!
