Just why is Green People's Organic Kids Sun Lotion so good?

http://www.borndirect.com/toiletries/baby+child/suncare/green-people/childrens-sun-lotion-no-scent-spf25

Everybody loves the sunshine!  And at last, the sun has come out.  Everyone is coming in to buy sun-hats, buggy shades, parasols and sun lotion.  For the last 13 years we have sold Green People Organic Kids sun lotion.  It is fantastic stuff and we don’t think enough people realise how great it is, so we decided to find out a bit more and spoke to Emily,  Green People's Product Manager.

The most asked question we have about the Green People Organic Kids Sun Lotion is: ‘Why is it only factor 25’ ? *

When protecting children in the sun it is always tempting to go for the highest SPF. The common misconception is that an SPF50 sun lotion offers twice the protection of an SPF25 but this is NOT the case.

In fact, an SPF25 sun lotion offers 96% protection against UVB rays, while SPF50 offers 98% protection against UVB - a marginal difference. In fact, the highest SPF100 still only offers 99% protection.

For the vast majority of people, SPF15 offers adequate protection, provided that commonsense measures are taken, such as applying sufficient sun lotion, reapplying after swimming and strenuous activity, and avoiding the sun between 11:00 and 3:00 when it is as its strongest.

The use of very high SPF products can lead to a false sense of security - although the skin may not show visible signs of burning, UVA rays will still be affecting deeper lying skin cells, leading to potential long-term damage.

Under new EU Recommendations, sun products must now offer protection against UVA equal to at least 1/3 the level of their claimed UVB protection. Green People sun creams  comply with the latest EU Recommendations and which are rich in naturally protective antioxidants.

* see update at the end of this blog

It would be good to have some clarity over what the SPF relates to? We say that 1 SPF = 5 minutes of coverage so that an SPF 25 gives you about 2 hours, is that correct?

The term SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and gives a guide to the length of time you can stay in the sun without burning.

For example, if unprotected skin starts to redden after 10 minutes sun exposure, then, when properly applied, an SPF25 sun lotion will allow 25 times this before the skin starts to burn – 10 minutes x 25 = 4 hours protection before you would need to re apply.

Can you tell me what makes the sun lotion effective? What are it’s active ingredients?

Our Children’s Sun Lotions use a unique blend of ingredients. The natural filters we use are Titanium Dioxide (natural earth mineral) and Isoamyl P-Methoxycinnamate (a derivative from cinnamon) and Edelweiss (plant found high on the Swiss mountains known for its natural sun protection properties).

The beautiful soft feeling on the skin comes from Olive, Sunflower and Palm Oil
To promote skin health and provide antioxidants we use Aloe Vera, Avocado, Rosemary and Myrrh Oil

What’s the difference between UVA and UVB coverage?

UVA Radiation
This is potentially the most damaging form as it penetrates deep into the skin where it can cause changes to the living cells in the basal layer. It is now understood that these changes to living skin cells are the primary cause of the most serious forms of skin cancer.  UVA also damages collagen and elastin, the main cause of wrinkles and premature aging in skin that is often exposed to sunlight.

UVB Radiation UVB radiation causes the appearance of a tan after sun exposure. It does this by stimulating the formation of the pigment 'melanin' in the deeper layers of the skin. Melanin acts as a skin protector by filtering out UV light - it is in fact part of our natural defence against sun damage.  UVB is also what causes sunburn.  It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and damages the skin's more superficial epidermal layers.  It also contributes toward skin aging.

The Organic Babies Sun Lotion costs more than many mainstream brands. Why are parents happy to pay this premium ?

The fact that it is a non-greasy, easy to apply natural sun lotion for babies and children. Which offers adequate UVA & UVB protection using only natural ingredients. Not only does it protect the skin from cell damage (using antioxidants), but also moisturises and soothes the skin.  Its scent-free formulation makes it the best choice for babies and children with sensitive skin including eczema.

UPDATE JULY 2015:

Why have Green People moved from an SPF25 to an SPF30 for their children's sun tan lotion?

Green People have made some changes to their sun lotion. These are the addition of an extra sun filter (which gives protection specifically against UVA radiation), changes in the level of the existing sun filters, and a new preservative system.  Having made these changes the products were submitted for independent SPF testing which showed that the children’s and adult SPF25 lotions were in fact offering much higher protection against both UVA and UVB rays.  This has enabled Green People to re-launch these products as SPF30.

Belly Bandits and Binding – About so much more than Skinny Jeans

When I first read about Belly Bandits,  I was very quick to presume that they were some sort of modern girdle to get women looking stick thin and fitting into their pre-pregnancy jeans within hours of giving birth.  Full of indignation, as I continued to read, I learned that far from being a modern westernised concept born of vanity, belly binding has been practiced by women around the world for thousands of years to protect their bodies and accelerate the post-birth healing process.

Ancient Symbol of Motherhood

One of the earliest forms of belly binding found was in the Mayan culture where women wound long strips of cloth and braided grass round their abdomens to push the stomach muscles back together, reduce postpartum bleeding and reposition the womb.  As the stomach healed and contracted, the cloth was shortened and tightened. In many tribes, this sort of belt was worn with pride and was in itself a symbol of motherhood.

Over the centuries, the practice spread around the world until each culture had it’s own practice of belly binding. Indian women would bind their stomachs as part of a ritual to warm and close the "open" stomach and birth canal after giving birth. It was also believed that binding would accelerate the body's process of getting rid of waste blood after the baby was born.

Since then, Japanese mothers have used a "sarashi" and Hispanic women wrap their bellies with a "faja" to help speed the healing process of their stretched-out midsections. In fact, mothers in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Latin America, Spain and the Philippines have commonly used and still employ some form of abdominal compression wraps to care for their bodies after giving birth.

So what are the benefits of Belly Binding?

Your stomach takes a fair bit of battering during pregnancy and often muscles become loose or separated. After giving birth, using a compression support such as the Belly Bandit encourages the use of your core muscles and gently persuades tummy muscles back together again. It helps to reduce the swelling of the uterus and decreases bloating from water retention.  Wearing a Belly Bandit gives your back and legs additional support and is great at supporting your upper body during breastfeeding. It has even been shown to minimize stretch marks and reduce the risk of hernias. And if you’ve had a C-section, you can position the Belly Bandit over the scar to protect it and keep the stomach compressed.

So yes, Belly Bandits can help you get back into your skinny jeans quicker but much more importantly, they help accelerate the healing process and are one of the kindest gifts you can give to your body after giving birth. I only wish I’d known about it sooner but I’ll be telling my daughter about it and hopefully she’ll be telling hers.  It’s time to reawaken this important tradition - after all, thousands of years of motherhood can’t be wrong.

Belly Bandits are available in Born stores or online at Born Direct

Visit the Belly Bandit website for more information.

Alessia's review of the Orbitbaby G2 stroller

Orbit stroller

Alessia worked in our Stoke Newington store and is now on maternity leave with her second child born recently. As well as working for Born Alessia has a lot of hands on experience of the products we sell and Born's ethos.  She is therefore in a great position to review the Orbit for us.

Like all our strollers the Orbit has a rear facing seat that allows you to keep your child facing you fo their entire childhood.  This is an issue highlighted by the reaseach of Suzanne Zeedyk,  read one of her articles on the subject here.  Eva

As an ambassador of the Orbit, I had the pleasure of trying this wonderful stroller.

I have a daughter who is almost three years old. First I must say that I realised too late that  I had made a bad choice with the first stroller I bought. That experience made me really fussy about which stroller I would have in future.

I believe it is essential to make the right choice. The stroller that you will choose will be your  companion for at least three years of your and your infant’s life. The first thing that struck me  about the Orbit is its practicality and compactness.

I am expecting my second child in four months, and I must say that the fact that this stroller can be closed with one hand and that it is fabulously light is really something to keep in mind.

Orbit foldedAnother advantage is that once closed it does not occupy much space. If you live in London
like me, on the second floor, in a small apartment, or simply just don’t like having large
objects in the way, this is an advantage.

My daughter is now walking a lot, but of course you still need the stroller for long walks.
She enjoys her new buggy and I’m sure the new baby will also. The chair itself can rotate
360 degrees, and can substitute for a high chair when eating out. It is also eco-friendly, much more convenient for outings and has more space than my previous buggy.  I also think it is important that your child can face you all the time as there is so much going on in London that it can be scary for babies if they cannot see their mum or dad.

My daughter loves it too, one day we were on our way to nursery and she asked to go in the Orbit because she said will cover her better from the wind.   She said ' I don't like the wind on my face mummy'. The large 'Paparazzi' hood is excellent for keeping the wind and sun off your baby.

Alessia

The Orbit stroller is currently on offer at Born.  The package from birth is currently £899.90 and contains the stroller, bassinet and rocking frame, and weather covers.

Just the stroller is the worlds greenest stroller. Find our more in our Q&A with the company's designers.

Since writing this review Alessia gave birth to a gorgeous baby boy.

Andy Warhol & Bugaboo- The perfect marriage between iconic art andinnovative design

Andy Warhol Flowers Tailored Fabric for the Cameleon Andy Warhol Flowers tailored fabric set for Bugaboo

After much anticipation, the Andy Warhol collection Bugaboo tailored fabrics have finally arrived. These are super limited in quantity and once they have gone that's it.  Georgi loves Andy Warhol, so was excited to write this blog about them.

I have never truly understood it when people say they are in love with their new shoes or new bag, I mean, they are material things. Well, I clearly had never seen such a beautifully designed product, one that brightens up your day, until Bugaboo released the Andy Warhol collections. I can safely say, I am in love with these.

First Impressions of Njoy Bubble rear facing stroller

NJoy Rear Facing StrollerWe have just had a delivery of the new Petite Star Njoy Bubble Stroller here in Bristol and we are already totally in love with it!

When we receive new products, we have great fun playing around with them and trying to suss out how they work, but we have already mastered this one as it is just so easy to use.

Straight out of the box, all you need to do is attach the front wheels and the canopy and it is good to go. It flips from rear facing to front facing in one swift motion, you don’t even have to remove any parts, it’s so simple it’s ridiculous.

It folds down like most umbrella type buggies, but again, it’s so simple and smooth you could do it with one hand. Once folded it is fairly compact and only weighs 8kgs.

It looks smart and the purple model is gorgeous in the flesh, great for a boy or a girl. And although the stroller is suitable from birth, the carrycot is a great addition, to make sure your newborn is cocooned from the elements. It looks super comfy and attaches easily to the stroller.

We think the best thing though is the price - the look and functions of the buggy would have you convinced it is worth more than the price tag suggests! But stroller, carrycot and footmuff for £260 is an absolute bargain.

We will take great pleasure in demoing and selling these. Like I said, we love it and we’re sure you will too!

Noa Noa Spring Summer Collection

And thats not all, not only does this range have an authentic haute culture-like look, each garment is made with love from luscious cotton, which stays looking just as beautiful wash after wash.

Bravado Pregnancy and Nursing Bras Video Reviews

I think Bravado Pregnancy and Nursing Bras are by far the most comfortable nursing bra you can buy, especially the Bravado Silk Seamless, which has received 5/5 stars in reviews from customers who have worn it.

I recently made some video's of the bras and tank tops so that customers can see the features of the bras.  I've had so many customers say that they wish they had bought Bravado bras first as they'd spent a fortune on bras they were not comfy or they had outgrown. These are two features you can count on with Bravado; stretchiness and comfort.

The Joolz Day Tokyo Limited Edition Stroller

Joolz Tokyo Stroller with Carryot'All Black' strollers are always a hit with urban parents, and I expect that the new Limited Edition Joolz Day Tokyo Stroller will be warmly welcomed by those who appreciate its distinguished qualities.  There is just a little bit of colour and frills added to the stroller by designer,  papercraft artist and illustrator Hiyoko Imai. Her illustrations are visible inside the canopy, on the parasol, and on the traditional Japanese Wrapping Cloth included with the stroller.

Introducing the Bugaboo Buffalo

buffalopic

This week Bugaboo launched to retailers its brand new stroller. The Bugaboo Buffalo is the 4th stroller in the Bugaboo family, positioned as an 'off-road' stroller - a distinct and very different pushchair from the others. The Bee+ is definitely the nimble city stroller, fantastic for the bus or tube.  The Cameleon is exactly that, a city stroller but with the off-road capacity should you need it; it's the multicoloured fabric combinations that really earn it its name. The Donkey launched a couple of years ago and is the work horse of the family, carrying twins or siblings with ease.

Summer is on the way - honestly!

Cute Summer Dress by Frugi

One of the highlights of my working week is when the new season's clothing arrives.  It is just like Christmas - even though I spend quite a bit of time selecting the items, six months has passed since I last saw them so it's always a bit of a surprise when they are unpacked; I also feel nervous waiting for the reaction from staff and customers.  Have I chosen well?  Do they like the range?  Sometimes I will love an item and everyone else hates it - the dreaded 'Marmite' effect.

The Orbit Baby Stroller - Possibly the Best Stroller Ever?

When Eva and I visited the Trade Show in Cologne in September 2010 we came across the Orbit Baby Stroller, and were immediately captivated.  We have both had experience of using and selling many different brands of buggies, but this particular design looked like it solved every 'niggly' problem we had come across with other brands.  Because of the stringent testing rules in the UK we had to wait a couple of years before the Orbit was available to us.

The Orbit has been available in the US for a few years now and has become a firm favourite with Hollywood celebrities such as Nicole Ritchie, Tori Spelling, Adam Sandler, Matthew Mc Conaughey, and Kourtney Kardashian to name a few.

We love its eco credentials - it is the greenest stroller on the market as most of the textiles are organic. It has a lightweight aluminium frame that folds incredibly easily one-handed too.  The best feature is the revolutionary 360 degree turning seat, which allows you to have the seat facing any direction, including sideways in the fondly named 'zoo mode' so you can push baby along whilst they look at the animals!

Come and try out this fantastic stroller in one of our stores - our staff will be happy to give you a demonstration.

Top ten gifts for new mums

New mums are so often given things for their babies. While that's often useful and appreciated, gifts which nurture mothers can powerfully remind them that they matter too. That's why Born's Becky put together her "top ten" list of gifts for new mums:

1.
A new mother pampering kit by Natalia. All new mothers deserve a little luxury and should be encouraged to have a nice, unwinding bath regularly.

2.
A multi-functional and incredibly comfortable feeding top from Boob. Designed to cover up a new mum's tummy while she's feeding.

3.
Some gift vouchers from Born. You can use these online to shop while sitting on the sofa feeding. Alternatively, you could make a home-made voucher booklet for gifts of time and energy, like an hour of cleaning, home-cooked meals, a good foot rub. This is a great gift for a close friend or sister.

4.
A nice book to read about mothering. What Mothers Do by Naomi Stadlen is reassuring and helps mothers feel more comfortable in their new role. (Naomi also runs groups in our London shop)

5.
A comfortable sling to help her get out and about - either a Moby or a Caboo?

6.
A beautiful blanket, to keep both her and her baby warm during night feeds.

7.
Some herbal teas, plus a cute teapot to go with them - and some cakes! Or you could add a regular veg box delivery. It's more healthy than just cakes and if you chip in and get with a bunch of friends you can often get quite generous boxes that include eggs, milk etc.

8.
The ultimate gift - an Olliella chair. It will last forever and looks beautiful in any room.

9.
A great changing bag is useful. Avoiding carrying one of those horror mummy bags is always a plus.

10. A cleaning lady. Many firms will do a big house clean or come for a few hours several times a week. This could mean more to the new mum in your life than you know!

Eva's pick: Disana, Hape and Orbit Baby

This week, "Ready for fun".

Disana is perfect for Autumn and Winter. It doesn't need washing, regulates your baby's body heat and lasts forever so makes perfect hand-me-downs.

Hape toys are simply high quality, reasonably-priced wooden toys.

The Orbit G2 stroller rolled past in action film Looper. It just goes to show that this pushchair's design is so advanced, it's practically futuristic.

Signs that Autumn is here

Children often make us slow our pace and really appreciate the change of seasons. We notice more. The everyday gains importance. Colder weather, falling leaves and richer food take on new meaning and inspire traditions for the families we've created.

Here at Born, we've got our own signs that tell us that Autumn is here.

More coughs and colds
When is it not flu season? True, but we definitely see more people reaching for natural cold remedies for babies and kids at this time of year.

Take a tip from the Aborigines and use eucalyptus as a decongestant. Throw in tea tree oil, wintergreen and peppermint. Leave the nasty petrochemicals behind.

We recommend Throat and Chest Balme by Songbird Naturals.  This is amazingly effective stuff, so much so that for a little baby we suggest you mix it 50/50 with a carrier of some kind, either the Tui Bee Balm, coconut oil or even olive or sunflower cooking oils.

More splashing
We've had some seriously rainy days recently, especially outside our Bristol store. It always seems the way that if you're a fair weather fiend, your child is destined to be a puddle magnet.

Arm yourself for the inevitable, we say. We love these Lolly Pop wellies by Aigle. They're flexible and soft for developing feet, latex on the outside, cotton on the inside and designed to last and last.

More cuddling
Autumn is all about snuggling beneath a comfy blanket, especially after a romp outdoors in the cold. If you've been on a walk with your baby, it might be time for some skin-to-skin reconnection.

A pretty blanket can only help. We're currently gushing over this Purple Owl Baby Blanket by David Fussenegger. It's great for keeping you and your baby warm during night feeds and possibly a perfect gift for a newborn.

Baby not walking yet? We've noticed lots of mums bundling their littles up and braving the great British weather.

Throw some stylish snuggling at your cold weather buggy walks with an Explorer Waterproof Buggy Snuggle or, if you have a Bugaboo, the new High Performance Footmuff will see you all the way through winter. Then the rain becomes an invitation, not a deterrent.

More layers
It's great being able to strip off during the summer but there's something about pulling on the layers when the weather gets cold again. When you're dressing your child too, it's double the fun.

We just can't get over how stylish, soft and cuddly this Long Sleeve Knitted Cotton Cardigan Rosa by Noa Noa Miniature Baby is! It's all cotton with mother-of-pearl buttons and designed to make any outfit Autumn-ready.

Of course, we can hardly talk about layers without mentioning Padraig Cottage slippers. They seem to have achieved cult status among our customers.

Made with pure New Zealand wool, dyed and crotched by hand in Canada and machine washable, anyone can see why. They'll last your child a fair while too.

Over to you – what are your signs that Autumn is here?

Six things every parent should know about cloth nappies

Thinking about giving cloth nappies a go but still a little unsure? With our Nappuccino coming up, we thought we'd chat real nappies.

Eva used washables with her own children when they were babies and spends a lot of time thinking about cloth here at Born. She's even written "The Real Nappy Guide" used by councils across the country. So, we'd say she knows a thing or two!

When we asked her to tell us what every parent considering cloth nappies needed to know, she came up with these six golden points:

"1. Changing cloth nappies is easy

They have moved on leaps and bounds from the old-style terry squares, pins and PVC pants that were used a generation ago.

Modern real nappies are fastened with Velcro or poppers, or are shaped so no folding is required and waterproof covers are polyester and breathable.

They can be made from a variety of fabrics including cotton, ultra-absorbent bamboo and hemp or fast drying microfibre.

2. Cloth nappies will save you money (even if you only use them part time!)

On average, you will save £600 using washables over disposable nappies. That's just with the first child. The more children you have that use the nappies, the more you save.

3. Cloth nappies are stylish

There are so many trendy designs of nappies that, nowadays, they are a fashion statement. Brands like itti bitti are sought after for their bright colours, prints and cuddle factor.

 5. A few extra bits can make cloth nappies even easier

There are three parts to a real nappy, 1. The outer waterproof but breathable wrap, 2. the inner absorbent part and 3. the paper liner, usually made from strong but flushable paper.

The only other bits you might need are a nappy bucket and net, and a waterproof bag to store your wet nappies in when out.

 6. Washing cloth nappies is a breeze

Throw away or flush the paper nappy liner. Wet or soiled nappies get stored in a bucket with a lid and transferred to the washing machine for a rinse and spin to flush out the wee. Then put in other whites and wash on a 40 or 60 degree cotton wash. No need to boil!

Those are a few of the really important bits I've picked up along the way!

Love, Eva."

All our nappies are extensively tested by mums and babies who tell us what they really think, so we just know that you'll find something in our selection that suits both your budget and your lifestyle.

Come and meet other cloth nappy mums at our Nappuccinno. It hits our Bristol store on Thursday 14th October, 11.30-1.30. Bring your friends, grab a coffee and ask your hardest nappy questions. You'll meet Andrea from itti bitti and leave with a gorgeous free wet nappy bag, special offers and a couple of hours well-spent.

See our Nappuccino Facebook event for more details.

Kids designs that never go out of fashion

Design aesthetics is a big thing for Born.  We think it's important that we take time to try and seek out products that offer something truly original.

But trying to find new, exciting designs for baby or toddler toys & furniture can be a very time consuming process, it seems there are few radical designs that ever make it into the nursery.  Which makes many of the following antique products even more interesting - not only cutting edge all those years ago, but many would seen as radical today!
